SuG Releases “VIRGIN”, Kickstarts “SLVS” Tour, Eyes Mexico City

SuG has proven how they could stay together and boldly move on living their new life as a band. After a long activity pause following their departure from their previous company, marked by a live at Yoyogi Second Gymnasium that was so sold out even the seats behind the stage were all occupied, SuG has returned with a string of records. Their live performances, either one-man or with other bands, have proven that they’re still a band to reckon.

On this year’s SuG’s day—March 9, or 3/9, a number association eternalized in their song 39GalaxyZ, SuG released their first major label mini album, VIRGIN, and held a fanclub-only live at LIQUIDROOM in Ebisu, Tokyo. The live was also a prelude to their 2016 tour, SLVS. If you wonder what these stand for, well, there’s a song called Smells Like Virgin Spirit in their new mini album.

The band, which not too long ago participated in JAPAN EXPO in Thailand, didn’t waste any time to stir the audience with their energy-driven performance. They launched explosively into songs after songs, starting with teenAge dream and SICK’S. As well as introducing new songs like Sakuraame, Jun · Fujuniseikouyu and In the shadow, SuG also performed old-time favourites such as Fukanzen Beautyfool Days and Howling Magic. They also included some songs released after their return to the scene such as BABY.

At the encore, during LOVE SCREAM PARTY, they switched positions; Chiyu (bass) took over the singing duty, while Takeru (vocals) and shinpei (drums) temporarily left their positions to fill the guitar parts, yuji (guitar) took the drumsticks, while masato (guitar) swung the bass.

After Takeru announced to the audience that they’d perform “like when we started our bands”, SuG played their take on L’arc-en-Ciel’s Driver’s High, and also covered SiM’s Killing Me. The two songs was followed by mad $hip.

For the very first time in Tokyo, SuG played Smells Like Virgin Spirit during the final encore. This song was debuted during SuG’s European tour at the end of last year, and to rile up the audience to sing-along to the chorus, Takeru shouted, “Louder than Europe!” The whole crowd responded back with energy and excitement.

The live basically kickstarted the SLVS tour that will cover 18 cities in Japan, starting from Nagoya on March 12. Two birthday events—exclusive for fanclub members—have also been announced, one for Takeru on May 11, and another for masato, who’s fondly known as maatan by fans, on May 26.
